From Solo Parent Vacation Hell to Pet-Sitting Heaven: A Mother's Journey

After my relationship ended, I naively thought vacations as a single parent would be easy. I soon discovered they proved often outrageously costly, otherwise seemed exclusively suitable for “traditional” households, or were far too cheap that I came home even more knackered than when I started.

Initial Holiday Attempts

The initial attempt, tenting alongside companions, was fine until I had to pack up our shelter. Hours of wrestling with the tent in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Subsequently, the adventure holiday for solo-parent households. Rappelling and exploring caves were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunk bed wrecked my spine. We tried a budget all-inclusive on the island, but the crowds of traditional families felt intense, and poolside chats with fellow ladies died down since I wasn’t come with a convenient husband for their own husbands to talk to. An excursion to Mallorca with a friend and her children was wonderful, but the cost was staggering.

Discovering House-Sitting

Then, the previous fall, an acquaintance inquired if we’d look after her pets within the county as she went to a wedding. During a tranquil weekend, we walked on the beach, and curled up near the fireplace at night. That led to house-sitting for her associate in Dorset, and it proceeded smoothly. Encouraged, I paid an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting platform, through which, in exchange for caring for people’s pets, you stay at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I secured a ten-day house-sit in Sussex, caring for a retriever named Buzz while his owners were abroad.

Our daily strolls gave us the opportunity to discover breathtaking natural settings.

It was the initial assignment for strangers, but any nerves dissipated the moment we reached at the gorgeous four-bedroom home and encountered the calm Buzz, who lived for tummy rubs. Our daily dog walks gave us the opportunity to venture into magnificent scenic areas, and, after we returned back, we were able to relax outdoors for meaningful conversations about our favourite “Ghosts” personas from the television series. We avoided any pricey overrated attractions to wander around – instead, we browsed bookshops, treated ourselves to manicures, and went on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and more joyful than ever for a long time, and noticed my bond with my daughter Polly strengthen every day. I don’t hesitant to admit that I wept from joy. Life seemed possible once more.

Is House-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting isn’t suitable for all. Certain individuals want no responsibilities during vacations apart from choosing their next cocktail, are not fond of dogs or cats, or perhaps find it strange about staying in a stranger’s bed, emptying the dishwasher, and putting out the trash. But the soothing pace of ordinary life, with work stripped out and new places to explore, suits me perfectly.

This prevents me from slipping into total idleness, which makes me feeling restless and strangely empty. Moreover, monetarily, house-sitting acts as a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day break in a similar-sized house within the identical region we visited could cost me back approximately £2,500 via rental platforms.

A New Perspective

As for staying in a stranger’s home, I discovered it nourishing. Although pet-sitting represents a exchange, it is equally an act of faith among strangers and creatures, which has brought out the finest version of me – my calm, caring and measured side, overflowing with gratitude for the people and locations we discover. I have scheduled another four days off, looking after a sighthound within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to try house-sitting abroad. Thanks to a bit of creative planning, we are able to see the world from the comfort of a home – it just turns out to be another person’s.
