According to a new book, though, that honor should go to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, which converted timber into planks using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct vessels faster than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, economic and cultural dominance in Europe and the world.

The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear.
